John Houle: Senior Technical Consultant, PVC Pipe Industry
John Houle holds a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri and an MBA from the University of Oregon. He has more than 25 years of experience in the plastic pipe industry in applications engineering, market development, forensic analysis, technical writing, and standards development.
The PVC Pipe Association has published a document titled “Guide for PVC Pressure Fittings.” The Guide contains information on PVC fittings standards and discusses available products and their applications. Also included are a design section focused on different methods to prevent pipe and fitting movement as well as an installation section that provides essential information for efficient construction of an all-PVC pipeline.
PVC fittings are available for the full range of AWWA C900 PVC pipe. Two manufacturing processes are used: injection-molding for 4- through 12-inch sizes and fabricating for 4- through 60-inch sizes. The primary advantage of PVC fittings is that PVC is not subject to corrosion. Sewer forcemain designers will especially benefit from the PVC fittings guide due to hydrogen sulfide corrosion of metallic and concrete fittings.
